About the Business

Originally called Black Pearl PDM, this client was an Atlassian Platinum Solution Partner specializing in complex implementation and consulting services.

A brand in search of its compass

Their original name — Black Pearl PDM — didn’t reflect their deep level of expertise. They needed a name and brand identity that felt more aligned with who they were — something that would signal confidence, capability, and forward motion.

When we guided the team through our one-word mission exercise, they landed (with complete conviction) on the word process. Not the flashiest choice, but one that reflected exactly how they saw their role: bringing order to chaos and guiding clients through complex transitions with care.

That became the seed of a bigger brand story. We identified their archetype as The Explorer — deliberate, prepared, mission-driven. Unlike wanderers, explorers pack with purpose, train with focus, and map their journey in advance — all characteristics echoed in how this team approached client work. That metaphor led the way for a visual identity rooted in arctic exploration.

From Black Pearl to Equip

It was that narrative that led me to the name Equip — a word that captures both mindset and mission. Derived in part from the Icelandic skipa (“to put in order”), it reinforced the very thing they cared most about: process. The kind that empowers.

This new name reflected not just what they helped their customers do, but who they were: experts, guides, and builders of structure in complex systems. Together, the brand and name positioned the company as a partner that helps clients move through complexity with confidence.

The company has since been acquired, but Equip remains one of my favorite naming projects — equal parts metaphor, strategy, and story.
